These tiny photosynthetic aquatic\nmicroorganisms scientifically known as ‘microalgae’ have the\nability to ‘fix’ or ‘captur e’ atmospheric CO2 as carbon rich\nbiological molecules such as lipids. So me species can accumulate\nupto 85% of their dry biomass in this form! The ‘algal oil’\nextracted from these oil-rich microorganisms hold enormous\n potential as the ‘fuel of the future’\; it has been predicted to\nbecome t he biggest contributor to 3rd generation biofuels (such as\nbiodiesel) as well as becoming the backbone for future generations\nof bioenergy.\nIn my presentation\, I provide an introduction to microalgae as\nthe source for the next generation of biofuels. The\nflood events of the r iver are due to the population and\ninterference of human activities. This channel is the holder for\nsewage\, domestic\, hospital and industrial wa stes. Poor waste\ndisposal habits are mainly responsible for the frequent flooding of\nthe river especially at downstream reaches. The channel veloc ity in\nthe lower course tends to zero due to urbanization in this region \nof floodplain which leads to increase in runoff\, chemical and waste\npo llution. This is responsible for the stagnant nature of the river\nin the lower course due to the compilation of heavy refuse.
