DESCRIPTION:The European Union has always defended the expulsion of\nundocu
 mented migrants. For that purpose\, it adopted in 2008 the\nso-called Retu
 rns Directive. The Directive provides with common\nstandards and procedure
 s in Member States for returning irregularly\nstaying third-country nation
 als. Among the measures that Member\nStates can apply there are the detent
 ion up to 18 months of\nirregular migrants or the imposition of a re-entry
  ban for five\nyears. Thus\, the Directive encountered fierce criticism\, 
 coming\nfrom different international organizations and states. Are the\ncr
 iticisms fair or misguided ? What is happening in\npractice ? In order to 
 answer to this question it is necessary\nto look at some of the most contr
 oversial provisions and the way in\nwhich they are being implemented in so
 me countries such as Spain or\nItaly.\nThe presentation will be followed b
 y a discussion.\nDiego Acosta is currently a last\nyear Law PhD student at
  Kings College and visiting lecturer and\ntutor at King's College\, Birkbe
 ck College and BPP in London. He\nholds a degree in Law (Madrid)\, LLM in 
 European Law (Stockholm) and\nDEA in Public International Law (Miami\, Mad
 rid). He has interned\nand worked for the United Nations (New York)\, the 
 European\nParliament (Brussels) and the Spanish Embassy (Bogotá\, Colombia
 ) on\nissues related with immigration\, subject on which he has published
