 \nresearcher and senior lecturer in Political Science and\nInternational R
 elations at the Department of Historical and\nPolitical Studies\, Universi
 ty of Padova (Italy).\nAbstract: Reflections on the Global Media Monitorin
 g Project\nIn my talk I would like to propose a way of looking at power an
 d\ninfluence in the world politics of communication that focuses on\nthe n
 exus between media research\, transnational communication\nadvocacy and hi
 gh level policy making. I shall do this by\ninductively starting from a sp
 ecific project - the Global Media\nMonitoring Project (GMMP) - and will pr
 oceed discussing the\nempowering potential of a chain of practices that co
 nnects\nknowledge production to discourses and norms formation which (may)
 \nend up informing actual policy making.\n\nI adopt here a broad understan
 ding of Global Communication\nGovernance (Padovani & Pavan 2010\; Raboy & 
 Padovani 2010)\,\none that acknowledges the interplay amongst different ac
 tors and\nmodes of intervention\, at different levels with different outco
 mes\,\nincluding cognitive and normative developments. Such understanding
 \ninvites a revision of the concepts of power and influence in the\nglobal
  context\; and calls for adequate\, and often multi-dimensional\napproache
 s\, if we are to fully appreciate the elements that\ncontribute to governi
 ng the global\, including global\ncommunication.\n\nI therefore suggest it
  becomes crucial to investigate the nexus\nbetween three elements: a) the 
 role of expert knowledge and\nepistemic communities and the potential of e
 mpirically viable\nresearch activities as resources for policy making\; b)
  the\npractices\, repertoires and outcomes of transnational advocacy\nnetw
 orks\, with a special attention for their framing of issues and\ndiscursiv
 e interventions\; and finally c) the possibility for\nresearch results and
  normative-oriented discursive practices\, to\ndevelop into statements tha
 t may inform and orientate global\ndecision making.\n\nI think the Global 
 Media Monitoring Project offers an amazing\nopportunity to look into these
  dynamics\, while possibly resonating\nto a diversified audience: from gen
 der aware individuals and\ngroups\, to students interested in the methodol
 ogies of the project\,\nto people with a specific interest for media refor
 m and\ncommunication rights activism from the local to the transnational\n
 level\, to scholars who share concerns about the future orientation\nof gl
 obal governance.\n\n\n\n
