 ration interprets the\nAUMF to allow the military detention of hundreds of
  prisoners –\nincluding Omar Khadr\, a Canadian citizen – and to allow the
 \n“targeted killing” of suspected terrorists – including Americans –\nfoun
 d far from any conventional battlefield.\nIs the United States fighting a 
 “war on terror”?  If it is\,\nwhere is the battlefield?  Who are the enemi
 es?  And when\nwill the war end?\nAbout the speaker\nJameel Jaffer directs
  the ACLU's National\nSecurity Project\, which litigates civil liberties a
 nd human rights\ncases relating to detention\, surveillance\, censorship\,
 \ndiscrimination\, and secrecy.\nAmong the Project's current cases are Amn
 esty v.\nBlair\, a challenge to warrantless wiretapping under the\namended
  Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act\; Mohamed v.\nJeppesen\, a suit aga
 inst a Boeing subsidiary that\nfacilitated the CIA's 'extraordinary rendit
 ion' program\;\nKindhearts v. Paulson\, a challenge to the\nTreasury Depar
 tment's blacklisting of a prominent U.S.-based\ncharity as a 'specially de
 signated terrorist organization'\; and\nACLU v. Department of Defense\, la
 ndmark\nlitigation under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) that has\nr
 esulted in the release of thousands of documents concerning the\nabuse of 
 prisoners held by the U.S. overseas.\nMr. Jaffer has testified before the 
 U.S. Congress about civil\nliberties issues relating to national security\
 , and his co-authored\nbook\, Administration of Torture\, an edited collec
 tion of\ngovernment documents relating to the abuse of prisoners\, was\npu
 blished by Columbia University Press in 2007.\nHe is a graduate of William
 s College\, Cambridge University\, and\nHarvard Law School. Before joining
  the staff of the ACLU in 2002\,\nhe served as law clerk to Hon. Amalya L.
  Kearse\, United States\nCourt of Appeals for the Second Circuit\, and to 
 Rt. Hon. Beverley\nMcLachlin\, Chief Justice of Canada.\nAttendance of thi
