 ts of the Swiss Federal Animal Protection\nAct\, and the employment of a p
 ublic animal welfare lawyer are\nall exceptional measures that have no equ
 ivalent in Canadian or\nU.S. law.\nPlease join the Student Animal Legal De
 fense Fund at 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ for\na presentation by Dr. Antoine F. Goetschel who\n
 will speak on advancements in animal welfare legislation in\nSwitzerland a
 s well as his role as the world's first and only\npublic animal welfare la
 wyer in Zurich\, Switzerland. In court\, Dr.\nGoetschel acts much like a p
 ublic prosecutor\, safeguarding the\ninterests of animal victims in crimin
 al cases. It is his job to\nenforce the Swiss Federal Animal Protection Ac
 t\, enacted\nin 2008\, which is generally regarded as one of the most prog
 ressive\npieces of animal protection legislation in the world.\nIn additio
 n\, Dr. Goetschel will speak on the current Swiss\npopular initiative that
  proposes to compel all 26 cantons of\nSwitzerland to appoint a public ani
 mal welfare lawyer which would\ngive domesticated animals the right to be 
 represented by a lawyer\nin court. On March 7th\, 2010 the entire Swiss po
 pulation will vote\nin a referendum on whether to accept this initiative t
 hat aims to\ngive unprecedented legal protection to animals.\nSpecializing
  in the field of human-animal relationships in the\nlaw since 1984\, Dr. G
 oetschel has been instrumental in drawing up\nanimal welfare legislation i
 n Switzerland. He is a visiting\nlecturer on animal welfare legislation at
  Zurich Law School\, and\nwas the Founding Director of the Foundation for 
 the Animal in the\nLaw (www.animallaw.ch).\nSince 1994\, he has been manag
 ing his own law firm in Zurich which\nworks on approximately 150 cases of 
 animal mistreatment per year\n(www.afgoetschel.com).\nDr. Goetschel's many
  publications include: 'The Animal in the Law\nTransparent'\; 'The Dignity
  of Animals'\; 'Legal Commentary on the\nGerman Animal Wel­fare Act'\; and
  'Law and Animal Welfare'. He is\nfrequently called upon by national and i
 nternational organizations\nto present on the relationship between humans 
 and animals in the\nlaw and has addressed the German Judges Academy\, the 
 European\nBiomedical Research Association\, and the Federation of European
 \nLaboratory Animal Science As­so­ci­at­ions.\nThis lecture is part of a l
