DESCRIPTION:THE DEVIL'S ART\nSelections from the William G. Colgate History
  of Printing\nCollection\nEstablished in 1954 from a gift of books from th
 e Toronto art\nhistorian\, William G. Colgate (1882-1971)\, the Colgate Hi
 story of\nPrinting Collection has grown to over 12\,000 titles. The Collec
 tion\nis noted for its extensive holdings of examples of printing\nincludi
 ng fine press productions\; but it also includes significant\nholdings on 
 the history and technique of printing\; on calligraphy\nand letter forms\;
  on the design of typefaces and typographical\nproductions\; on type found
 ing and type founders' specimens\; of\nprinters' manuals and handbooks\, i
 ncluding those for colour\nprinting\; on the history of book binding with 
 selected examples\;\npapermaking and paper specimens\; and book design.\nT
 he current exhibition focuses on type design and printing\ntechniques from
  the hand-press period\; the history of printing and\nthe work of the quin
 tessential late eighteenth-century Italian\nprinter Giambattista Bodoni (1
 740-1813). There were a number of\nsignificant type designers in the eight
 eenth century including the\nEnglish masters William Caslon (1693-1766) an
 d Edmund Fry\n(1754-1835) and the firm of Fry Steele and Co. French design
 s of\nthe late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century\, including
 \nthose of the Didot family\, were also to have a long heritage.\nPrinting
  manuals document the technical improvements in press\nequipment since the
  fifteenth century\, while histories of printing\nrecount both the origins
  of printing in different countries and the\ncontroversies surrounding the
  credit for the invention itself.\nThanks to the generous support of the F
 riends of the Library\, it\nhas been possible to catalogue over 3\,000 tit
 les during the past\nyear\, thus making this exceptional collection more f
 ully available\nto students and researchers.\nThis exhibition has been arr
