DESCRIPTION:Prof. Bouchard will address current features of public\ndiscour
 se about identity in Quebec. In this lecture\,\nBouchard will explore the 
 ways in which the idea of identity can be\nmade compatible with pluralism 
 and interculturalism (the philosophy\nof exchanges between cultural groups
  within a society).\nBouchard believes that it is important for all Quebec
 kers\nto re-affirm their commitment to the values of a liberal democracy\n
 and argues that there is no radical opposition between liberalism\nand the
  notion of a national identity.\nThe Lecture will be introduced by Charles
  Taylor\, who co-chaired\nthe Consultation Commission on Accommodation Pra
 ctices Related to\nCultural Differences. The Commission was launched by Pr
 emier Jean\nCharest in 2007 to examine the social accommodation of religio
 us\nand cultural minorities in Quebec.\nGérard Bouchard's lecture is open

 ement des sciences\nhumaines at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi\, wh
 ere he holds\nthe Canada Research Chair in Comparative Dynamics of Collect
 ive\nImaginary. Professor Bouchard holds a master's degree in sociology\nf
 rom Université Laval (1968) and a doctorate in history from the\nUniversit
 é de Paris (1971).\nAbout this lecture series\nThe lecture is part of the 
 Alan Aylesworth Macnaughton Lecture\nseries on contemporary issues of publ
 ic policy. A lawyer and\nCanadian parliamentarian\, Senator Macnaughton\, 
 BA'26\, BCL'29\,\nLLD'92\, was Speaker of the House of Commons\, founder o
 f the\nCanadian World Wildlife Fund\, and a member of the Faculty of Law\n
 Advisory Board.\n
