DESCRIPTION:Nature in Glass—the Blaschka Glass Models\nThe Blaschkas were a
  father and son team of glass blowers who\nworked out of Dresden (in north
 ern Germany) in the late 1800s. They\ncreated glass menageries of sea anim
 als\, flowers and even enlarged\nmicroscopic organisms such as hydrazoans 
 (pictured here). Blaschka\nmodels were distributed and acquired by museums
  and university\ncollections worldwide but due to the fragility of their\n
 construction very few remain intact. The Blaschka sculptures are\nknown as
  unique examples of anatomically detailed\, scientifically\ncorrect glass 
 representations of hundreds of species of marine\nanimals\, and greatly ma
 gnified microscopic organisms. The\nsculptures are so detailed that they a
 re in many cases startlingly\nrealistic. Modern glass artists have been un
 able to recreate these\nstunning\, intricate sculptures and they remain ‘a
 n artistic marvel\nin the field of science and a scientific marvel in the 
 field of\nart’.\nThe Blaschka glass model exhibit launch features a\nprese
 ntation: Glass in Nature at 2 pm\, in\nthe Auditorium. Learn about the won

 ist because of it.\nCommonly found in nature as sands\, or the hard minera
 l\nquartz\, Silica is a major part of volcanic glass\, holds\nup delicate 
 sponges such as the Venus Basket\, and can be found\nin rare fossil animal
