DESCRIPTION:Giorgio Agamben has introduced the idea of whatever being as a
 \ntag for a contemporary mode of belonging unbound by the\ninscriptions of
  disciplinary identity. Some agree that this mode\ncould herald a better c
 oming community. Linking whatever being to\nappearances of whatever in net
 worked communications and positioning\nit within a brief history of the in
 terconnections between media and\nidentity\, I argue that whatever being i
 s the wrong model for a\nsubject capable of left political practice and op
 position.\nJodi Dean is\nProfessor\nPolitical Science at Hobart and Willia
 m Smith Colleges in\nGeneva\, New York and Erasmus Professor of the Humani
 ties in the\nFaculty of Philosophy\,\nErasmus University\, Rotterdam\, the
  Netherlands. Dean is the\nco-editor of the international journal\, Theory
  and\nEvent. Jodi Dean is a political theorist who is engaged with\ncontem
 porary radical political thought and questions surrounding\npolitics and e
 merging media technologies. She has written\nextensively on Slavoj Zizek (
 including her book\, Zizek's\nPolitics) and has also published critical ar
 ticles on Judith\nButler\, Hardt and Negri\, Jacques Ranciere\, Michel Fou
 cault\, Jurgen\nHabermas\, Iris Marion Young and Giorgio Agamben\, among o
 thers. She\nis animated by concerns about contemporary media and political
 \nculture\, particularly in post 9/11 North America\, with quite\nradical 
 takes on questions concerning publicity\, contemporary\ndemocracy\, networ
 k culture\, the Left\, conspiracy theory\, strangers\nand secrecy (see Pub
 licity's Secret\, and\, her most recent book\,\nDemocracy\nand Other Neo-l
 iberal Fantasies\, at Duke University Press\,\n2009).\n
