This raises new questions\, such as: What authorizes visual\nmeaning as a matte r of law? And how will jurists deal with the\nrecurring metaphysical anxie ty that has long been associated with\nthe potency of the image? The baroq ue and contemporary neo-baroque\nlove/hate relationship with the image (wh at Bruno Latour calls\n“iconoclash”) reflects a recurring ‘either/or’ resp onse: either the\nimage is what it shows\, either it is a transparent fram e\, like a\nwindow onto reality (the so-called “naïve realist” response) o r it\nis a deceit that ought to be rejected\, perhaps destroyed (the\nicon oclastic reaction).\nProf. Sherwin contends that the pictorial turn in law will\neventually lead to a more rhetorically sophisticated response to\nl aw as image\, but along the way what is left of our Cartesian\nassumptions about conventional semiotic meaning will be\ntransformed. The prospect of that transformation – moving perhaps\nfrom the digital neo baroque to the aesthetic and ethical sublime –\nemerges as we continue to work through t he cultural\, cognitive\, and\nmetaphysical challenges that visualizing la w presents.\nAttendence of this conference provides 1.5 hours of continuin g\nlegal education hours to members of the Quebec Bar\, as per the\nBar's mandatory professional training requirements.\nThis event has been made po ssible by a grant from the Beatty\nMemorial Lectures Committee.\nThe Insti tute for the Public Life of Arts and Ideas thanks the\nDepartment of Art H istory and Communication Studies and the Canada\nResearch Chair in Law and Discourse for their support of this\nevent.\n DTSTART:20100217T220000Z DTEND:20100217T220000Z LOCATION:Redpath Museum\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0C4\, 859 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Beatty Talk - Legitimatrix: Law\, Ethics and the Digital Neo-Baroqu e URL:/channels/event/beatty-talk-legitimatrix-law-ethic s-and-digital-neo-baroque-113269 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
