 ception to follow.\nAbstract: In late spring 1894 Millicent\,\nDuchess of 
 Sutherland (1867-1955) opened the first in a series of\nannual cottage cra
 fts exhibitions meant to promote and sell\nhand-made textiles produced by 
 cottagers and crofters in Scotland.\nThese displays\, which took place in 
 her London home Stafford House\nconsidered the 'grandest private house eve
 r built'\, symbolically\nendorsed the relationship between Highland identi
 ty and urban\nexperience\, which had become so much a part of both a roman
 tic\nvision of the north and internal tourism since the middle of the\nnin
 eteenth century. This talk will discuss how the tweeds and\nhomespuns were
  transformed into 'smart gowns'\, and thus translated\nfrom rough Highland
  cottage craft to valued social signifier within\nthe spaces of the sumptu
 ous London interior. Millicent Sutherland\nfacilitated the transformation 
 and the translation by advising\nweavers of the latest fashion trends\, by
  wearing tweed and by\npromoting London tailors such as D. H. Evans of Oxf
 ord Street who\nconstructed fashionable garments from 'genuine' Highland t
 weed.\nJanice Helland\, Ph.D.\, is a Queen's National\nScholar and Profess
