 gen Evans Professor in the Humanities at Northwestern\nUniversity. She spe
 cializes in the social history of\nnineteenth-century art rooted in Paris 
 and in transatlantic\nexchanges between France and the U.S. Her publicatio
 ns include\nPainted Love: Prostitution in French Art of the Impressionist 
 Era\n(Los Angeles\, 1991\; reprint 2003)\; a co-edited thematic study\,\nU
 nderstanding Paintings: Themes in Art Explored and Explained (New\nYork\, 
 2000\; translated into six other languages)\; and Paris in\nDespair: Art a
 nd Everyday Life Under Siege (1870--71) (Chicago\,\n2002). She has most re
 cently written three essays investigating the\narts of privacy and the int
 erior. Her current research focuses upon\nU.S. artists in Paris (1870-1914
