 \nLorne Gales Lecture in the History of Science\nThe image of the 'commons
 ' (knowledge commons\, science commons\,\ncreative commons\, etc.) has bee
 n extraordinarily important in the\ndevelopment of 'cultural environmental
 ism' – perhaps the most\nimportant progressive discourse about intellectua
 l property today.\nCultural environmentalists champion collaborative modes
  of\nknowledge production and the defense of the public domain against\nth
 e increasingly intensive and extensive privatization of\nknowledge. Althou
 gh a strong supporter of the political goals of\nthat movement\, Professor
  Mario Biagioli is concerned by the use of\nenvironmental imagery to recon
 ceptualize intellectual property.\nStarting from critiques of the nature/s
 ociety dichotomy put forward\nby science studies practitioners\, he argues
  that the proponents of\nthe 'knowledge commons' start with a well-intenti
 oned critique of\nintellectual property\, but end up reinforcing its logic
 . Because\nthe image of the 'commons' and other environmental metaphors do
  not\nquestion the nature/society divide at the roots of intellectual\npro
 perty law\, they actually end up reinforcing that which they are\nmeant to
  question. Prof. Biagioli will begin to sketch out that\napproach in this 
 lecture\, by showing how one of the foundational\ntexts of copyright law –
  Edward Young's 1759 Conjectures on\nOriginal Composition – cannot maintai
 n the very dichotomy it sets\nout to establish between nature and society\
 , and ends up casting\nthe author\, literally\, as a vegetable.\nMario Bia
 gioli\, Professor of the History of\nScience at Harvard University\, is th
 e author of \nGalileo\, Courtier (1993) and \nGalileo's Instruments of Cre
 dit (2006)\; and has\nco-edited \nScientific Authorship (with Peter Galiso
 n\, 2002)\,\n\nThe Science Studies Reader (1999)\, and the forthcoming\nMa
 king and Unmaking Intellectual Property (with Peter\nJaszi and Martha Wood
 mansee)\, and Worldly Science (with\nJessica Riskin). His current projects
  include a book on the history\nof authorship\, intellectual property\, an
 d credit in science\n(Scientists' Names and Scientific Claims)\, and a vol
 ume on the role\nof environmental imagery in recent intellectual property 
 discourse\n(The Author as Vegetable). He has been the recipient of numerou
 s\nawards and grants\, including a Guggenheim Fellowship. Formerly a\nphot
 ographer and historian of photography\, Prof. Biagioli maintains\nstrong i
 nterests in museum studies and imaging techniques\, recently\ncurating an 
 exhibit of patent models ('Patent Republic'\, with\nJean-François Gauvin) 
 and organizing conferences on new media and\ndigital art ('Recoded: Landsc
 apes and Politics of New Media'\, with\nKriss Ravetto).\n
