 las Howard\, filmmaker and former member of Tribe 8\, will\ninvestigate ou
 tsider stories in film through clips and discussion\nof his work. He will 
 discuss the relationships between voice\, style\nand language along with i
 ssues of memory\, loss and desire. In so\ndoing\, he will explore how expe
 rimental and queer theories interact\nwith classical structure and transgr
 essive narratives in film.\nSilas will focus on the power of transformativ
 e loss\, grief and\nhumor and the relationship to a transgender representa
 tion in his\nwork.\n\nHistorically the white middle class has defined itse
 lf by what it\nis not. It is the identification and casting out of the “ot
 her”\nthat has helped dominant society draw parameters around what it\ncon
 siders to be normal or desirable. In other words\, the “other” is\nnot out
 side of society\; it is the exclusion of the “other” that\nbecomes the fou
 ndation of “normal” society. In recent years\, we\nhave seen the immense a
 bility of dominant society to co-opt certain\nnarratives and make them int
 o stereotypes.\n\nSilas will address questions such as: What happens when 
 ‘the other’\ndoes not adhere to its given stereotype? Does the “other” get
 \npunished for transgression or is there an opening for a\nnon-dominant na
 rrative to be heard? Conversely\, what happens when\nthe central character
  is playing out its given stereotype?\n\nClips will be shown from Rise Abo
 ve\; the Tribe 8 Documentary\,\nnarrative feature By Hook or By Crook\, sh
 ort documentary What I\nLove About Dying\, his new short film\, Blink\, an
 d excerpts from his\nsolo show\, Thank You For Being Urgent.\n
