DESCRIPTION:The talk will explore the politics of literary representation\n
 across the divide between Orientalist discourse and Anglo-American\ntheory
  on the one hand\, and Arabic intellectuals' challenges to the\ncolonial r
 epresentation of the region over several generations in\nEgypt and Morocco
  on the other.\nHosam Aboul‐Ela is Associate Professor at the University o
 f\nHouston\, Department of English in the College of Liberal Arts and\nSoc
 ial Sciences. Hosam Aboul-Ela is an associate professor\, who\nteaches cou
 rses in postcolonial literature\, literary theory\, and\nworld literature.
  His research takes a radically comparative\napproach\, combining explorat
 ion of the various fields of\nglobalization theory\, postcolonial studies\
 , literature of the\nAmericas\, translation studies\, and Arab cultural st
 udies. His work\nexamines the point of connection between the literary and
  the\nsocial through the historicization of critical theory. He is the\nau
 thor of Other South: Faulkner\, Coloniality\, and the Mariátegui\nTraditio
 n (U of Pittsburgh P\, 2007) as well as critical articles\nappearing in Am
 erican Literature\, Arab Studies Journal\, Edebiyaat\,\nMELUS\, Mississipp
 i Quarterly\, and Rethinking Marxism. He has also\ntranslated Voices by So
 leiman Fayyad (Marion Boyars\, 1993) and\nDistant Train by Ibrahim Abdel M
 eguid (Syracuse UP\, 2007). His\ncurrent projects include a new book exami
 ning the link between\nliterary culture and empire in the United States fr
 om World War II\nto the present and a translation of the novel talassus by
  Egyptian\nauthor Sonallah Ibrahim. He is also co-editor with Gayatri\nCha
 kravorty Spivak of 'Theory Around the World'\, a new publication\nseries t
 ranslating critical theory from outside Europe and North\nAmerica.\n
