 nesses. He will illustrate a\npsychological science approach to these obse
 rvations by describing\ntwo of his own research studies with groups of peo
 ple who reported\nUFO close encounters. He will also review skeptics’ expl
 anations\nfor the close encounter reports\, and discuss the outcome of a\n
 lively symposium where researchers and skeptics met at a\npsychological sc
 ience convention in 2008.\nFollowed by the 1977 film Close Encounters of t
 he Third\nKind where Cableman Roy Neary is one of several people who\nexpe
 rience a close encounter of the first kind\, witnessing UFOs\nflying throu
 gh the night sky. He is subsequently haunted by a\nmountain like image in 
 his head and becomes obsessed with\ndiscovering what it represents\, putti
 ng severe strain on his\nmarriage. Meanwhile\, government agents around th
 e world have a\nclose encounter of the second kind\, discovering physical 
 evidence\nof otherworldly visitors in the form of military vehicles that w
 ent\nmissing decades ago suddenly appearing in the middle of nowhere.\nRoy
  and the agents both follow the clues they have been given to\nreach a sit
 e where they will have a close encounter of the third\nkind: contact.\n
