 terests include: religious authority in\nclassical\, medieval\, and modern
  Islam\; history of Islamic law in\nthe Middle East and in late medieval a
 nd modern South Asia \;\ninstitutions and traditions of learning in Islam\
 ; Islamic political\nthought\; and contemporary religious and political mo
 vements in the\nMuslim world. He is the author of The Ulama in Contemporar
 y\nIslam: Custodians of Change\; Religion and Politics under\nthe Early Ab
 basids\; and Ashraf Ali Thanawi: Islam in\nModern South Asia. With Robert 
 W. Hefner\, he is also the\nco-editor of Schooling Islam: The Culture and 
 Politics of\nModern Muslim Education and\, with Roxanne L. Euben\, of a\nf
 orthcoming volume on Islamism. Among his current projects is a\nbook tenta
 tively titled Internal Criticism and Religious\nAuthority in Modern Islam.
