 ysics Department\, 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ)\nWe know a lot about the universe as
  it was when it was 300\,000\nyears old\, through studies of the cosmic mi
 crowave background\, and\nwe can measure the local universe to learn a lot
  about the last few\nbillion years of its nearly 14 billion years. However
 \, there is a\nperiod in between (roughly the first half a billion years) 
 which is\nextremely difficult for us to see because there were no sources 
 of\nlight. These cosmic 'dark ages'' ended when the first stars turned\non
 \, providing the first view of the somewhat evolved universe.\nUnderstandi
 ng this period is expected to give new insights into\ndark matter\, dark e
 nergy\, star formation\, and the physics of the\nearly universe. This is a
  new frontier in astrophysics and\ncosmology\, combining observations from
  the largest radio\, mm-wave\,\noptical\, and gamma-ray telescopes\, and i
 nvolving some of the most\ndemanding computational projects in astronomy a
 nd astrophysics.\nSponsored and organized since 2003 with the express purp
 ose of\nfostering communication between scientists in different discipline
 s\nas well as between scientists and the public\, the Cutting\nEdge lectur
