 e emergence of diseases like SARS\, swine flu\, Ebola\, and HIV in\nhuman 
 and wildlife populations. Tropical freshwater systems have\nalso suffered 
 from human interference: fish catches have declined\ndrastically\, the pol
 lution of surface and ground water has become a\nserious threat\, and intr
 oductions of exotic species have led to\nunprecedented changes in freshwat
 er communities – most notably in\nLake Victoria\, the world’s largest trop
 ical lake and Africa’s most\nimportant source of inland fisheries producti
 on.\n\nColin Chapman received his joint PhD in anthropology and zoology\nf
 rom the University of Alberta\, then spent two years at 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ and\nthree 
 years at Harvard doing postdoctoral research. Since 1990\, he\nhas served 
 as an honorary lecturer in the Department of Zoology at\nMakerere Universi
 ty in Uganda and since 1995 he has been an\nassociate scientist with the W
 ildlife Conservation Society. Colin\nalso served for 11 years as a faculty
  member in zoology at the\nUniversity of Florida\, and returned to 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ 
 in 2004 to join the\nDepartment of Anthropology and the 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ School of E
 nvironment\,\nwhere he holds a Canada Research Chair in Primate Ecology an
 d\nConservation.\n\nLauren Chapman\, PhD’90\, conducted three years of pos
 tdoctoral\nresearch at Harvard’s Museum of Comparative Zoology. She has se
 rved\nas an honorary lecturer in the Department of Zoology at Makerere\nUn
 iversity since 1990 and as an associate scientist with the\nWildlife Conse
 rvation Society since 1995. Prior to returning to\n91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ in 2004\, Lauren
  was a faculty member in zoology at the\nUniversity of Florida for 11 year
 s. She is now a professor of\nbiology at 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ and holds a Canada Researc
