 d mathematics is intimate but not often\nexplored\, possibly because texti
 les and fiber arts have\ntraditionally been the domain of women while math
 ematics was viewed\nas a male endeavour.  How times have changed!  Today\,
 \ntextiles and mathematics\, like art and science\, are recognized for\nth
 eir interwoven\, complimentary attributes.  In this\npresentation\, I will
  examine the connection between textiles and\nmathematics\, in the context
  of both traditional and contemporary\nquilts.\nIn a sense\, every quilt i
 s a mathematical object\, by virtue of\nthe fact that it has shape and dim
 ension. But some quilts are more\nmathematical than others\, and in very d
 ifferent ways.  I will\nshow how mathematical concepts such as symmetry\, 
 fractals\, and\nalgorithmic design show up in the world of quilting throug
 h\nserendipitous and intentional design.\n \nOrganized by the Royal Societ

 ommunication between\nscientists in different disciplines as well as betwe
