DESCRIPTION:Blood-based transcriptomics in breast cancer\nepidemiology\n \n
 Given the number of factors that influence expression\nregulation\, it is 
 not surprising that often more than one strong\nsignal is present in any g
 iven high-dimensional dataset. Peripheral\nblood is an ideal surrogate tis
 sue as it has the potential to\nreflect responses to changes in the immedi
 ate and distant\nenvironments by alterations of gene expression levels. Th
 us\, there\nis growing evidence that use of peripheral blood cells for\ntr
 anscriptome analysis is valuable to assess environmental- or\ndisease- ass
 ociated gene signatures.\nDuring this talk\, I will focus on altered gene 
 expression in\nblood by inter-individual or lifestyle factors\, breast can
 cer\ndiagnosis and late-side effects related to breast cancer treatment\n(
 e.g. chronic fatigue). Significant results are obtained by\nexamining the 
 biological implications grouped into gene sets\,\nrather than specific sin
 gle genes tested for differential\nexpression. Perturbed pathways were mor
 e or less numerous and\ndistinct across variables with also some similarit
 ies emerging\,\nperhaps unsurprisingly\, in terms of immune response. Refi
 ned\nanalysis identifying key genes specific to blood cell subtypes can\na
 lso provide exciting functional information.\nIt is within the prospective
  cohort design that the most\nsuccessful examples of biomarkers and diseas
 e outcome are found -\nthis will be where the novel design of the Norwegia
 n Women and\nCancer (NOWAC) postgenome study can prove valuable.\n \n
