 approach to economic\ngrowth and development\, it raises fundamental ethic
 al\nquestions\, including issues of equity\, justice and human\nsecurity. 
 For academic research to make valuable\ncontributions to bringing about ch
 anges in both\nunderstanding and policy\, there is a need for more innovat
 ive\napproaches\, drawing on different disciplines and types of\nknowledge
 . I will discuss some of the social challenges of\nresponding to climate c
 hange\, and explain why it is time for\nhuman dimensions research to go mu
 ch deeper\, exploring\nhow culture\, values\, and\nworldviews influence sy
 stems and behaviors. I will\nexplain why I think an integral approach can 
 help us to\nbetter understand and address some of the\ncontradictions and 
 paradoxes that are impeding action\ntowards a sustainable future.\nDr Kare
 n L. O'Brien is chair of the Global\nEnvironmental Change and Human Securi
 ty (GECHS) project of\nthe International Human Dimensions Programme on\nGl
 obal Environmental Change (IHDP). Her current\nresearch focuses on climate
  change vulnerability and\nadaptation\, and on the role that values and wo
 rldviews\nplay in responding to environmental change. She has recently\npu
 blished a book with Robin Leichenko on “Environmental\nChange and Globaliz
 ation: Double Exposures” (Oxford\nUniversity Press\, 2008).\n
