 ncredible Human'.\nThis lecture will be presented by Dr. Dennis Osmond\, C
 M\, BSc\,\nMB\, ChB\, DSc\, MRCS\, LRCP\, FRSC\, Robert Reford Emeritus Pr
 ofessor of\nAnatomy\n\nIn 2001\, 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ became the first university in Can
 ada to offer a\nMini-Med School\, a public education program originally cr
 eated in\n1989 at the University of Colorado by 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ alumnus Dr. John\nC
 ohen.\n\nThe goal of 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ’s Mini-Med School was to give the public an\nu
 nderstanding of basic medical sciences and an idea of what\nstudents learn
  in the first two years of medical training. From its\nbeginning\, the Min
 i-Med School was a success.\nIn this repeat of the inaugural Mini-Med lect
 ure\, Dr. Osmond\nreveals the complexity and beauty of the human body by t
 he study of\nits structure. He traces the way we have come to know about h
 uman\nanatomy\, through the long and often turbulent history of dissection
 \nto modern imaging techniques. After an overview of the main body\ncompon
 ents\, he considers the anatomy and function of the human hand\nas an exam
 ple of how structures come together to form a powerful\nbut delicate and s
 ensitive instrument. Finally\, he shows that the\nexperience of working on
  the bodies of donors not only provides\nstudents with knowledge that lays
  an essential foundation for other\nmedical sciences and clinical specialt
 ies\, but also promotes\npersonal development and preparation for a caring
  medical\npractice.\n\nDr. Dennis Osmond is a highly respected researcher 
 and teacher in\n91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ’s Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology. He create
 d the\n'Anatomy for Surgeons' medical elective in 1977\, one of the most\n
 popular and long-standing courses for fourth-year students. He was\nnamed 
 to the Faculty of Medicine’s Honour List for Educational\nExcellence in 20
 00 and received the Osler Award for Outstanding\nTeaching in 2007.\n\nNOTE
