Humans are the world’s greatest evolutionary force. We\nhave achieved this dubious distinction through the many ways in\nwhich we perturb the enviro nment\, thereby altering how selection\nacts on natural populations. These changes in selection have\nprecipitated evolutionary changes in populatio ns experiencing\nclimate change\, trophy hunting\, commercial fishing\, in vasive\nspecies\, and pollution. In some cases\, these evolutionary change s\nmay be important to the persistence of populations facing\nenvironmenta l degradation. Humans can also alter the process of\nevolutionary diversif ication itself – we can enhance\ndiversification by creating new niches fo r species and we can\nreverse diversification by blurring the distinction between\nexisting niches. For all of these reasons – and more – evolution \nwill be critical in shaping the future of biodiversity in this\nincreasi ngly human-dominated world.\n\n\nOrganized by the Royal Society of Canada and 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓÆµ with\nthe express purpose of fostering communication between scientists\nin different disciplines as well as between scientist s and the\npublic.
