 f Canadians wrote to the\nMinister and their local Members of Parliament\,
  leading to town\nhall meetings\, negative press coverage\, and the growin
 g realization\nthat copyright was fast becoming a mainstream political and
  policy\nissue.\nThe 'Canadian copy-fight'\, which includes many new advoc
 acy\ngroups and the Fair Copyright for Canada Facebook group that has\nove
 r 90\,000 members\, has attracted considerable attention from the\nmainstr
 eam media\, with many wondering how copyright had emerged as\na contentiou
 s policy issue. This talk will assess both the\nlegislative proposals and 
 the Canadian copyfight experience in an\neffort to answer the oft-asked qu
 estion – 'why copyright?'.\n
