DESCRIPTION:The social sciences literature and policymakers often take for
 \ngranted that positive developmental outcomes\, including poverty\nreduct
 ion\, risk mitigation and democratization\, are mutually\nreinforcing. Yet
  the empirical evidence is still ambiguous\,\nparticularly for post-confli
 ct and fragile states. To help fill\nthis void\, the Centre for Developing
 -Area Studies\, the Development\nResearch Group of the World Bank and the 
 International Development\nResearch Centre are undertaking a major new cro
 ss-regional\,\ninterdisciplinary study of the relationship between\ndemocr
 atization\, poverty reduction and risk mitigation in fragile\nand post-con
 flict states. More specifically the project will\nexplore three sets of re
 lated issues: 1) Participatory Governance\nand Service Provision\; 2) Powe
 rsharing for Peacebuilding and\nDevelopment\; and 3) The Economic Agenda f
 or Post-Conflict\nReconstruction. These issues will be addressed through a
  series of\npapers addressing the larger theoretical aspects and empirical
 \ntrends\, and detailed case studies of Bosnia\, Colombia\, Lebanon\,\nRwa
 nda\, Sri Lanka and Sudan. The Workshop is the first stage of the\nproject
 \, in which the larger theoretical issues will be discussed\nwith the aim 
 of preparing a shared perspective for guiding the case\nstudies. Beyond it
 s specific findings\, the project hopes to serve\nas a model for developin
 g effective North-South and South-South\nresearch collaboration.\nThe work
