 ologies to welfare. In a\ncomparative investigation of the trend toward th
 e\nuse of\nbiometrics to identify welfare recipients in both the US and in
 \nCanada\, Magnet interrogates the scientific gaze of the state\nin order 
 to problematize the\ndevelopment of new technologies able to visualize cri
 minality\nthrough the scrutiny of poor women’s bodies.\nIn order to avoid 
 the\ntechnologically deterministic claim that biometric imaging\ntechnolog
 ies have developed independent of their\ncultural\ncontext\, she grounds t
 heir expanded use in the increase in policing\ntactics against people of c
 olour and poor Americans and\nCanadians -a\nstate of affairs that has inte
 nsified with the gradual dismantling\nof the New Deal. While it is common 
 to begin an examination of the\nexpansion of surveillance technologies fol
 lowing September 11\,\n2001\, Magnet demonstrates that technologies of sur
 veillance and\ncriminalization were in widespread use in both countries a 
 full ten\nyears earlier\, as part of the continuing national\nproject to\n
 regulate those receiving assistance from the state.\n
