Brewer (The Ohio State University)\,\nJane Curran (Dalhousie University) and Elizabeth Eger (King ’s\nCollege London).\n\nHow do printed texts interact with other media in the formation of\ncommunities in late eighteenth and early nineteenth-cent ury Europe?\nAs reading becomes an individual activity as opposed to a com munal\none\, it also functions as a way of drawing together increasingly\n large communities whose members cannot meet face to face. The\nnation\, ex plored by Benedict Anderson\, is but one example. But how\ndo self-conscio usly literary communities imagine themselves in a\nworld of profound polit ical change in which print technologies\,\ndistribution infrastructures an d property rights are evolving just\nas rapidly?\n\nIn bringing together s cholars from both Europe and North America\,\nwe hope to highlight the lin ks between correspondence networks\,\nprinted books\, reading publics and membership in intellectual and\nsocial institutions such as academies and salons. Among the topics\nwhich may be addressed are the ways in which int roductions and\ndedications tell us about the use of printed material to b uild\ncommunities and how editors consciously sought to recreate\ncommunit ies by publishing the work of authors together. In tackling\nquestions suc h as these from a variety of disciplinary\nperspectives\, we hope to bette r understand how sociability is\ninformed by and in turn shapes interactio n through a variety of\nmedia\, including print.\n\nAll are welcome to att end.
