DESCRIPTION:Geoff Eley is the Karl Pohrt Distinguished University Professor
 \nof Contemporary History. He has published widely in German history\nof t
 he 19th and 20th centuries\, including his first book\,\n“Reshaping the Ge
 rman Right: Radical Nationalism and Political\nChange after Bismarck” (198
 0\, new edn. 1991) and a general\nreinterpretation of German history joint
 ly authored with David\nBlackbourn called “The Peculiarities of German His
 tory” (German\nedn. 1980\, English 1984). His essays in the German field r
 ange\nwidely from the later 19th century down to the present. He is\ncurre
 ntly finishing another book on liberalism\, popular politics\,\nand the cr
 eation of the German national state between the 1860s and\nthe 1890s. On a
  broader front\, he is preparing a volume called\n“Genealogies of Nazism: 
 Conservatives\, Radical Nationalists\,\nFascists in Germany\, 1860-1945”. 
 His edited volumes include\n“Society\, Culture\, and the State in Germany 
 1870-1930” (1996)\, “The\n‘Goldhagen Effect’” (1997)\, and (with Jan Palmo
 wski) “Citizenship\nand National Identity in Twentieth-Century Germany” (2
 007). With\nRon Suny he edited a Reader on Nationalism called “Becoming\nN
 ational” (1996) and with Nicholas Dirks and Sherry Ortner a Reader\non Soc
 ial Theory called “Culture/Power/History” (1993). His general\nhistory of 
 the Left in Europe\, “Forging Democracy”\, appeared in\n2002\, and a study
  of the shifting popularity of social history and\ncultural history during
  the past four decades\, “A Crooked Line”\,\nwas published in 2005. A join
 tly authored book with Keith Nield\,\n“The Future of Class in History: Wha
 t’s Left of the Social? \,\nappeared in February 2007. His longer-term pro
 ject is a book on the\ncontested images of the national past in British an
 d German cinema\nbetween the 1960s and the present. In addition to German 
 history\,\nhis teaching interests include Europe since 1945\, nationalism\
 ,\ncultural studies\, and historiography. He joined the History\nDepartmen
 t at Michigan in 1979. During 2004-07 he chaired the\nDepartment of German
 \, Dutch\, and Scandinavian Studies\, and in Fall\n2002 acted as Director 
 of the Program in Film and Video Studies\n(now Department of Screen Arts a
 nd Cultures). For many years he\ndirected CSST\, the Program on the Compar
 ative Studies of Social\nTransformations. He previously taught at the Univ
 ersity of\nCambridge and was educated at Balliol College\, Oxford\, and th
 e\nUniversity of Sussex.\n
