  the Civil War and Reconstruction\,\ncitizenship and civil rights in the l
 ate nineteenth and twentieth\ncenturies\, social and political history fro
 m the 1920s to the\npresent. His research interests have focused on the so
 cial\nfoundations of the American right in the twentieth century. He is\nt
 he author of Citizen Klansmen: The Ku Klux Klan in Indiana\,\n1921-1927\, 
 which won the Outstanding Book Award by the\nGustavus Myers Center for the
