DESCRIPTION:Nanophotonics refers to the interaction of light with structure
 s\nthat have dimensions of a few hundred nanometers or smaller. At\nthat l
 ength scale\, which is below the typical wavelength of light\,\na variety 
 of interesting effects arise. Some of these relate to\noptical interferenc
 e\, whilst others are associated with quantum\noptics. This lecture illust
 rates current research into the\napplications of nanophotonics to optical 
 telecommunications and\nalso biosensing to show how nanophotonics enables 
 us to make\nextremely compact optical integrated circuits that are suitabl
 e for\nintegration with microelectronics. Cutting Edge Lectures in Science
 \nwas initiated in 2003 with the express purpose of fostering\ncommunicati
 on between scientists in different disciplines as well\nas between scienti
 sts and the public. Sponsored by the Royal\nSociety of Canada\, they are m
