 bitat\nfragmentation\, will cause massive species extinctions. These\npred
 ictions are based on theory that couples the predicted change\nin conditio
 ns with the known ecological attributes of contemporary\npopulations of an
 imals and plants. They are limited by our\nimperfect understanding of ecol
 ogical and evolutionary response.\nThe ecological response will depend on 
 the web of interactions\namong the animals\, plants and microbes of a part
 icular ecosystem.\nThe evolutionary response will depend on the ability of
  natural\nselection to drive rapid evolutionary change. This lecture will
 \nevaluate the possibility of 'evolutionary rescue' of stressed\npopulatio
 ns by natural selection.\nCutting Edge Lectures in Science was initiated i
