  of Environment\, which is hosting the\ndiscussion as part of its 10th ann

 processed.\nElena Bennett earned her PhD in Limnology and Marine Sciences
 \nfrom the University of Wisconsin. Her research focuses on advancing\nthe
 ory about the interactions among ecosystem services - the things\nthat peo
 ple get from nature like food\, fresh water and recreation\nspace. Before 
 coming to 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ\, Dr. Bennett worked on the\nMillennium Ecosystem Assessm
 ent\, a 1\,500-person\, four-year attempt\nto quantify the state of ecosys
 tem services around the world.\nGeorge McCourt\, MSc’92\, is a Faculty Lec
 turer in the 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ\nSchool of Environment. He graduated with his BSc in G
 eology from\nthe University of Alberta in 1975 and obtained his MSc in 198
 0 at\n91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ in Natural Resource Sciences. His interests are Quaternary\nP
 eriod studies and paleo-climatic reconstructions. He currently\noversees s
 tudent projects that deal with water consumption\, waste\nmanagement and r
 educing carbon footprints. Professor McCourt won\nthe 2007 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ Principa
 l’s Prize for Teaching Excellence in the\nFaculty Lecturer category.\nDona
 ld Smith is a James 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ Professor\, Chair of the\nDepartment of Plant S
 cience and head of the Green Crop Network and\nthe 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ Network for Inno
 vation in Biofuels and Bioproducts.\nRecent work in his lab led to the dis
 covery of two sets of\ncompounds produced by bacteria that cause plants to
  grow faster and\nproduce more biomass and seeds. Increased biomass produc
 tion means\nmore CO2 is taken from the atmosphere through photosynthesis\,
 \nreducing greenhouse gases. In his 20 years at 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ\, he has been\nprin
 cipal investigator on research activities exploring\ntechnologies that can
  lead to a more sustainable society. Dr. Smith\nwas recently honoured by t
 he Association francophone pour le savoir\nwith the 2007 Prix Michel-Jurda
