 ow DNA can be\nused to explain virtually all differences between individua
 ls. For\nexample\, genetics have provided important answers as to why some
 \npeople are more susceptible than others to certain diseases. Now\,\nthe 
 emerging field of epigenetics is changing many of our\nfundamental assumpt
 ions and demonstrating how our environment\ninfluences\, or programs\, the
  genome - called the epigenome - over\nthe course of our lives. As we lear
 n more about the process\, we are\nunlocking new approaches to diagnosing\
 , treating and preventing\ndevastating illnesses.\nMoshe Szyf is a James M
 cGill Professor in the University’s\nDepartment of Pharmacology and Therap
 eutics. His research focuses\non understanding the role of the epigenome i
 n causing cancer\, as\nwell as applying this research in identifying novel
  approaches to\nfighting the disease. Recently\, in collaboration with McG
 ill\nneuroscientist Michael Meaney\, his lab discovered that maternal\nbeh
 aviour can alter epigenetic mechanisms in offspring.\nPlease note that \no
