 \nTwo Studies”| Despite significant changes in the higher education\nsecto
 r internationally over recent decades which have seen\nincreasing numbers 
 of women entering academic employment\, women\nremain under-represented in
  senior academic ranks. Whichever way we\nlook at it\, gender remains a ke
 y factor in determining academic\ncareer outcomes. At the same time\, whil
 e research represents only\none strand of academic work (alongside teachin
 g and service or\nadministration)\, in the modern university\, it is gener
 ally taken to\nbe the defining feature of the academic enterprise. Given t
 oo that\nresearch performance is generally a central factor in promotion t
 o\nsenior levels\, the relationship between gender and research\nactivity 
 is of critical importance for those interested in the\nadvancement of wome
 n within the academy. This presentation examines\nfindings from two studie
 s concerned with questions of gender and\nresearch performance. The first\
 , a qualitative study focused on\nwomen’s capacity to establish and mainta
 in highly successful\nresearch careers within universities\, engages with 
 debates about\nthe complicated nature of unbounded intellectual work and t
 he\ncommodification of academic labour through the technologies of the\nne
 o-liberal workplace. The second study\, based on a major survey of\nPhD gr
 aduate outcomes\, investigates gender differences in early\ncareer academi
 c employment paths and research performance. The\nstudy seeks in particula
 r to identify and assess potential barriers\nfor women’s university career
 s that lie in the context of their PhD\nexperiences and to investigate the
  impact of having children on\ngender differences in early academic career
  formation.\n
