 anniversary of the Alliance for Historic Landscape Preservation\n(AHLP). T
 he talk keynotes the traditional goals of heritage\nlandscape preservation
  into a global environmental context. When\nthe view of Lijiang's contorte
 d peaks or the Three Gorges of the\nYangzte is invisible because of a brow
 n cloud of Asian air\npollution\; when Europe's cloistered gardens melt an
 d shrivel in\nacidic rain\; when the soft\, rural landscapes that form the
  jewelled\nsetting of the world's great cities are transformed into asphal
 t\nsprawl\; and when the covered bridges and byways of rural North\nAmeric
 a are industrialized to produce monocultures of identical\nplants or confi
 ned animals\, the entire idea of what an historic\nlandscape is and how it
  might be preserved has to be profoundly\nreinvented. Holly Dressel\, trai
 ned in France as a medieval art\nhistorian with an emphasis on the history
  of architecture and\narchitectural spaces\, argues that the human altered
  landscapes are\nthe primary bridge between the entire span of human cultu
 re across\nthe globe and the shared natural systems upon which all life\nd
 epends. In this lecture she will draw the good news from current\nlegislat
 ion protecting vast agricultural areas across Europe and\nfrom little-know
 n historical landscapes in India and South America\nthat combine culture a
 nd aesthetics with a profoundly ecological\nunderstanding of water and lan
