Filip Remunda and Vit Klusak\, two of Eastern Europe's mo st promising young documentary filmmakers\, set out to explore the psychol ogical and manipulative powers of consumerism by creating an ad campaign f or something that didn't exist. The campaign (designed by a renowned adver tising agency) involved television and radio spots\, 400 illuminated billb oards\, 200\,000 flyers promoting Czech Dream brand products\, an advertis ing song\, a website and ads in newspapers and magazines. For two weeks\, Prague streets were saturated with advertising for the fake hypermarket. T he ads proclaimed: 'Don't Go\, Don't Rush\, Don't Spend\,' drawing over 4\ ,000 people to turn up on the 'opening day.' On May 31\, 2003\, they arriv ed at a green field where\, instead of a hypermarket\, they found just the dream hypermarket's façade (10m high and 100m wide). 'Czech Dream' is a f unny and provocative look at the effects of rampant consumerism on a post- communist society. It has also caused some controversy\, provoking extreme reactions in the Czech people and media and even discussion in the Czech Parliament. With the recent entry of the Czech Republic and other Eastern European countries to the EU\, and with people's changing attitudes to con sumerism and globalization\, it is equally relevant to capitalist societie s all over the world.\n DTSTART:20080205T220000Z DTEND:20080205T220000Z LOCATION:Leacock Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 2T7\, 855 rue Sherbroo ke Ouest SUMMARY:91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ East European and Russian Film/Documentary Series: 'The Czec h Dream' (2004\, Czech Republic\, film\, 87 minutes) URL:/channels/event/mcgill-east-european-and-russian-f ilmdocumentary-series-czech-dream-2004-czech-republic-film-87-minu-28966 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
