 tute. Pulsatile release is a prominent feature of many\nhormones secreted 
 from the pituitary gland. This has led to a\nsustained interest in the pos
 sible functions of the pulsatility and\ninvestigations of the importance o
 f pulsatility in hormone\nreplacement therapy. In particular\, growth horm
 one\, an essential\nhormone for normal growth and metabolism\, is secreted
  in a striking\npulsatile pattern. These pulses decline with age. Differen
 ces in\nthe temporal pattern of growth hormone release evoke remarkable\nm
 ale-female differences in body growth\, liver enzyme gene\nexpression\, an
 d signaling in single cells. In this talk\, I will\ndescribe the control o
 f growth hormone secretion and will discuss\nthe brain mechanisms that gen
 erate its periodicity. I will also\ndiscuss several current clinical contr
 oversies surrounding the\nuse/abuse of growth hormone to increase height i
 n short children\,\nto improve muscle strength and function among athletic
  youth\, and\nto retard or reverse the effects of aging in older adults.\n
