By the 1950s\, the NF B retained a large roster of filmmakers on permanent contracts\, produced over one hundred films annually\, and continued to build an international reputation for artistic innovation. The NFB’s production staff also includ ed three full-time composers — Maurice Blackburn\, Robert Fleming\, and El don Rathburn — who were all classically trained and who joined the Board i n the mid-1940s. With few exceptions\, the NFB’s postwar documentaries are underscored by music written by these three composers. Scoring government films poses specific compositional challenges\, and by the late 1940s\, t he staff composers had developed similar ways of navigating the constraint s\, aesthetic boundaries\, and ideological strictures imposed by the insti tution. This gave rise to an idiosyncratic “NFB sound” that characterizes the standard documentaries from this period. In this paper\, I define the postwar NFB sound\, examine the political dimensions inherent in the aesth etics of this music\, and the role it plays in constructing the ideologica l messages embodied in these films.\n\n Biography:\n\n Allyson Rogers is a P hD candidate in Communication Studies at 91˿Ƶ supervised by J onathan Sterne and Will Straw. She holds a Master of Arts from Carleton Un iversity\, a Bachelor of Music from the University of Alberta\, and diplom as in jazz performance (drums) and recording arts from McEwan University. Her dissertation investigates the music and sound of the National Film Boa rd of Canada during the wartime and postwar period\, exploring the politic al and aesthetic dimensions of the NFB’s original film music.
