 ades we have modelled our understanding of hunter-gatherer\n\ndiets on the
  idea that calories were the driving force behind diet choice and that a b
 road spectrum diet was\n\nnecessarily a symptom of population packing or e
 nvironmental degradation. While this model of diet choice is\n\nstill a ro
 bust measure\, its application seems increasingly tenuous with regard to t
 he baseline changes in human\n\nhunting strategies that preceded the adopt
 ion of agriculture. Here\, we will look at human adaptations to the Gobi\n
 \nDesert of Mongolia and China as a means of untangling the complex relati
 onship between evolutionary ecology\,\n\nenvironmental constraints\, calor
 ic intake\, nutrient balancing and socially-mediated diet choice.\n\nCentr
