 iability in speech production\, cognitive processes\, and tools for creati

 s of cognitive processing\n\n				For many years\, theories of language product
 ion assumed a strict functional separation between peripheral phonetic enc
 oding processes and more central cognitive processes. The output of lexica
 l access—the processes mapping intended messages to utterance plans—was as
 sumed to yield a plan that was simply executed by more peripheral processe
 s. Recent work has challenged such proposals\, showing that on-line disrup
 tions to lexical access can affect gradient phonetic properties (e.g.\, ph
 onological speech errors influence the phonetic properties of speech sound
 s\; Goldrick & Blumstein\, 2006). I'll discuss two sets of projects from m
 y lab that extend this work. Large data sets\, enabled by machine-learning
  based techniques for automated phonetic analysis\, provide new insights i
 nto the consequences of cognitive disruptions for monolingual speech. I'll
  then discuss how cognitive disruptions modulate cross-language interactio
 ns in multilingual speakers.\n					 Bio:\n					Dr. Matt Goldrick is professor and ch
 air of Linguistics at Northwestern University\, where he is affiliated wit
 h the Cognitive Science and Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Programs. His r
 esearch—utilizing behavioral experiments as well as computational and math
 ematical modeling—focuses on theories of the cognitive and neural mechanis
 ms underlying linguistic knowledge and processing in mono- and multilingua
 l speakers (supported by the US National Science Foundation and National I
 nstitutes of Health.) He currently serves as an associate editor of Psycho
 logical Science and secretary of the Association for Laboratory Phonology.
