Transforming Health Care Systems – Let's Simulate

The majority role of simulation in health care has been focused upon education of clinicians, with respect to procedural, team-based and communications skills. Simulation centres now abound across the US, Canada and Europe, many of which comprise full scale facilities such as an emergency room, operating suites, outpatient clinic areas, hospital wards, and even patient homes.

These 'simulated health care systems' have the potential to transform health care, through development, testing and implementation of innovative processes, or care pathways, training of multi-disciplinary staff in new working models, engagement of patients in their own care delivery, especially for chronic diseases and episodes of planned care, and to train medical professionals to truly deliver value-based care.

Simulation of health care environments also enables new technologies to be efficiently and effectively tested, in a full-scale in vivo environment, prior to safe translation in a clinical setting. This ecosystem is underpinned by collaboration of clinicians with expertise in clinical outcomes, human factors, design engineering, creative arts, serious gaming, and health policy to imagine and truly realize our future health care systems.
