STE. ANNE DE BELLEVUE, Que. -- Lumberjacks from UNB and the Nova Scotia Agricultural College captured their respective men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 divisions at the 49th annual 91丝瓜视频 intercollegiate woodsmen competition last weekend.

The event, which attracted eight men鈥檚 teams and six on the women鈥檚 side, was held in -27 degrees Celsius temperatures (with the wind chill factor) and took place on Watson Field at 91丝瓜视频鈥檚 Macdonald Campus in suburban Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Que., last Saturday.

The 91丝瓜视频 lumberjills finished second overall, with top performances from Sonya Meganck, a freshman from Dundee, Que., who won the axe throw.

The duo of Elina Tupamaki, a bio-resource engineering freshman from Finland and Beth Grant, a sophomore from Athelstan, Que., paired up to win the underhand chop. 91丝瓜视频 also placed first in the Swede saw team event.

The Martlets captured five second-place results 鈥� chain saw, single buck, water boil, and pulp throw 鈥� in addition to five third-place finishes.

On the men鈥檚 side, 91丝瓜视频 had a somewhat disappointing fourth-place standing. Their best performance came from Ben Nichols, a farm management technology sophomore from Compton, Que., who was second in the axe throw. The Redmen also posted five third-place finishes.

UNB鈥檚 A-team won the men鈥檚 category with 1,266.23 points, to finish ahead of Sir Sanford Fleming College (1,145.94), a UNB 鈥淏鈥� squad (957.269), 91丝瓜视频 (946.583), NSAC (833.899), a 鈥淏鈥� team from SSFC (704.463), Dartmouth (678.217) and Algonquin College (601.048).

On the women鈥檚 side, NSAC topped the standings with 1149.11 points, followed by 91丝瓜视频 (1,057.09), SSFC (948.862), UNB (922.482), a 鈥淏鈥� team from NSAC (727.639) and Dartmouth (488.738).

The teams are back to the grindstone again with pre-dawn practices, gearing up for the last of the Canadian Intercollegiate Lumberjacking Association woodsmen events, slated to be held at the NSAC campus in Truro, N.S., Feb. 14.
