After editing Jane Austen's favourite novel, Sir Charles Grandison (Oxford University Press, 1972), Jocelyn Harris, Emeritus Professor at the University of Otago, New Zealand, wrote Samuel Richardson (Cambridge University Press, 1987), Jane Austen's Art of Memory (Cambridge University Press, 1989), and, most recently, A Revolution Almost beyond Expression: Jane Austen's Persuasion (University of Delaware Press, 2007). She is also the co-editor of Approaches to Teaching the Novels of Samuel Richardson (Modern Language Association of America, 2006). Professor Harris, who is among the world鈥檚 most distinguished scholars of Richardson and of Austen, traces what Austen made of her predecessors and contemporaries to try to catch her in the act of greatness.
