Dr. Paul Helmer, pianist and musicologist, will be discussing Denis Stevens, who served briefly as Dean of Music in the mid 鈥�50s, without ever appearing on campus. The controversy surrounding his appointment resulted in the Faculty settling one of the thorniest issues faced by music faculties everywhere - the relative roles of academic study and performance.
