Is Czech nationalism what you think of when Hamlet comes to mind? Probably not, yet a performance of Hamlet in Nazi-occupied Prague in 1941 attracted a huge audience that greeted the play as an expression of Czech national aspiration. The play has also been a rallying point for collective self-affirmation in 19th-century Germany, and in modern Poland and Quebec.
