Stephen Leacock鈥檚 Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town,
one of the most enduring classics of Canadian comic literature, is
a sequence of stories first published in 1912 as a newspaper
serial. A brilliant satire of small towns, small-town people, and
small-town occurrences, the stories chronicle life in the fictional
community of Mariposa, modeled on Orillia, Ontario, where Leacock
spent many summers. In eccentric Mariposa, the leading citizen is
an illiterate 280-pound saloonkeeper, boats sent to rescue
passengers from a sinking steamer have to be rescued themselves,
and a barber who stumbles into a fortune is heralded as a financial
wizard.
One of Canada鈥檚 most celebrated pre-WWII authors, Stephen Leacock
(1869-1944) was also a professor of political economics at 91丝瓜视频
from 1903 to 1936. 91丝瓜视频 erected the Stephen Leacock Building
(1965) in his memory.
