 st and Present Entanglements of Religion and Politics'\n\nWorkshop descrip
 tion:\n	What does God have to do with the state in a putatively secular era
 ? How do religious ideas shape the efforts of groups to craft alternative 
 states\, or to seek to change existing states from within? How do groups c
 ompete to mobilize sacred power in divided societies? Focusing on the 19th
  century to the present\, and with case studies from Europe\, southern Afr
 ica and the Americas\, this workshop explores the intersections of sacred 
 and political power in societies shaped by Christianity and colonialism wh
 ile claiming to have been emancipated from both.\n\nThe workshop\, brings 
 together historians and religious studies specialists to explore the compl
 icated and shifting relationships of religion and politics in Christian an
 d would-be secular and post-Christian states\, with attention to struggles
  to control sacred power in divided societies. The workshop adopts a broad
  definition of both religion and politics appropriate to our current era o
