Their common interest in preserving\, reproducing\, an d classifying Arabo-Islamic sources\, ranging from books to manuscripts\, led Abraham Shalom Yahuda\, Muḥammad Amīn al-Khanjī and Samī al-Khānjī int o a decades-long interconfessional ṣuḥba (collegiality/friendship). It arg ues that a form of ṣuḥba existed between Yahuda and al-Khānjīs that facili tated the movement of Arabic and Islamic knowledge from the East to the We st motivated not only by mutual economic benefit but also by satisfying in tellectual and ideological objectives during the nahḍa movement and the co lonial era. By reframing ṣuḥba in this intellectual context\, this lecture highlights its role in the complex interplay between cultural exchange an d the formation of modern nationalist identity.\n\nMostafa Hussein is an a ssistant professor of Jewish-Muslim Studies in the Judaic Studies Departme nt at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. His scholarship offers fresh perspectives on Jewish-Muslim intersectionalities\, shedding light on the complex cultural and historical interconnections between these communitie s. Dr. Hussein’s recently published book Hebrew Orientalism: Jewish Engage ment with Arabo-Islamic Culture in Late Ottoman and British Palestine (Pri nceton University Press\, 2025) is shortlisted for the 75th National Jewis h Book Award.
